His Life A Ransom
Mark 10:45 (ESV)
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
When I read the Bible I almost always think about what it is saying I should do. Sit up straight. Quit lying. Don't brag.
The first of our gospel verses I have been meditating on hit me that way again. I naturally jumped on the first obvious life change I need to make. SERVE OTHERS BETTER. But that's not the point of the verse.
A gospel verse is meant to show us something about Jesus and his "good news" work for us. In other words, it's actually about him and not me. In this verse Jesus is demonstrating condescension on a level we can't begin to imagine, nor could the disciples. Read the context and you'll see how these words would have hit his prideful followers hard.
Jesus, the creator of the universe, came to earth to serve us! What's more, he came to give away his life as a ransom for you and me. He came to step in for me, take my place of pain and suffering.
I have to remember to read the Bible correctly. The accent is always on Jesus. Oh, what a gift I've been given. Jesus takes my place and I am free. What love is this?
Challenge: Skim through Mark 10 and see the flow of the topics. Then you can really appreciate these words of Jesus in verse 45.
